The NORTH EASTERN POLICE
The NORTH EASTERN POLICE ACADEMY (erstwhile the Regional Police Training College) is an establishment of the Govt of India, under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is situated in Ri-Bhoi District of Meghalaya and has been in existence since July,1978. It is engaged in shaping Police Officers of North Eastern States for equitable, effective and sensitive policing. It is dedicated to teaching its police trainees that they exist to safeguard the value of freedom - freedom from disorder, criminal acts and criminals jsp hosting. The Academy is located at Umsaw Village under the Ri-Bhoi District of Meghalaya, just west of Guwahati - Shillong National Highway. A 20 Km walk towards the north from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, 83 Km South from Guwahati on the Shillong-Guwahati National Highway and 12 Km west from Umroi Airport. The entry point on the main G S Road is called Umsaw Dyke. After crossing just around 100 yards, from the main Guwahati-Shillong road, on the approach road of the Academy, there is one sentry post called R P Gate. This is the main entrance to the Academy. The Academy has a beautiful sprawling campus spreading over an area of 205 acres of land at a height of 976 metres (3500 ft) free web hosting.The climate of this area is moderate with average temperature of 28o Celsius in summer and 15o Celsius in the winter. The peak of monsoon starts from the month of May and continues upto September. The area is thickly covered with forest having variety of indigenous flora and fauna. This Academy takes pride in preserving and protecting the environment. In the year 1972, the National Committee on Police Training, headed by Dr M S Gore, in its report vide para-12 of Chapter XII, recommended the setting up a Regional Police Training Institution under the North Eastern Council, now directly under Ministry of Home Affairs to cater police training needs of all the N E States . The Gore Committee observed “…. There are some States and Union Territories in the country where the annual intake as well as the total complement of the Police Force is small and where independent Institutions may not be feasible. We recommend that the Central Government should set up at least one Police Training College and one Police Training School for such States and Union Territories. These can, perhaps, be located very advantageously under the Eastern Zonal Council at Shillong or Guwahati to serve primarily the needs of Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram” domain hosting.This recommendation was brought to the notice of the NEC by Shri B R Sur,IPS, then IGP Tripura. Accordingly, the North Eastern Council (NEC) took up initiatives and submitted the proposal to the Government Of India on which the administrative approval of the President of India for establishing the Institution was received, vide Ministry of Home Affairs letter No.III-14013/104/76-NE dtd 28/10/1977.
